NYC
18 April 2020With our upcoming album Live in Rio we also celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the band. Back in 2010 The Jig was already doing a lot of local gigs. But we decided it was time for something big. We went to New York City to record our album in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Recording and mixing in the Grand Street Recording Studios took us six days and resulted in our debut album Brooklyn Blowout. Before and after the studio sessions we did three gigs in Manhattan: Nublu in Alpabet city, Fontana’s in Chinatown and Kenny’s Castaways in Greenwich Village. The song Larry is on our first record and we always play it live: a tribute to the great bass player Larry Graham.
-
Rock Supplies
11 April 2020Arry Niemantsverdriet, the fabulous bass player of The Jig, is owner of the Rock Supplies Amsterdam. Together with his crew he runs these rehearsal studios in Amsterdam Baarsjes with an abundance of love for music and an inseparable bond with all the musicians. Rock Supplies is homebase of The Jig: to hang around, rehearse and record: the last two albums of the band were cut here. In this Corona crisis, Rock Supplies had to close temporarily. When this is over, let’s all go to Rock Supplies again to keep the place alive and kicking. And to Give It Back !

Denying principles
4 April 2020Today the 4th clip of our concert at Rio das Ostras Jazz&Blues Festival. This is where Mr. Ruben enters the stage. The Jig with a singer: that was never going to happen. But sticking to your principles is unhealthy. Therefore, in 2016 the Jig musicians threw them overboard happily and asked lifelong friend Ruben Seyferth to join the band. Here on Come Get It, you can hear that among his inspirators is Prince, one of our favorite funk heroes.
-
Gorgelen
28 March 2020Dear friends, here's the 3rd clip of our concert at Rio das Ostras Jazz&Blues Festival. The song is called Jorge Leigh, let us try to explain why.... It has to do with the sound of Bas, playing here on an original Hammond B3 organ with Leslie speaker. He is actually making a gargling sound, in Dutch we call this "gorgelen". Translated phonetically, with a reference to our Brazilian friends, a dose of fantasy and a lot of beer, we came to the title Jorge Leigh. Enjoy it at home, stay strong and safe

Online funk part 2
21 March 2020To all the people in the world at home: keep on keeping on! Here's the second song of our concert at Rio das Ostras Jazz&Blues Festival in Brazil. After two more studio albums, we are now preparing the release of The Jig - Live in Rio. Enjoy another preview here, stay safe and we will be back next week.

The Jig denies principles
10 November 2015The Jig with a singer: that was never going to happen. With this instrumental funkband it’s all about the marvellous mingling between horns and rhythm section. They don’t need a spoiled ego maniac in front to take a packed house to a higher level. The band proved this over the past six years. But sticking to your principles is unhealthy. Therefore, the Jig musicians throw them overboard happily en present their new single wíth vocals: The One. In this biting banger you can hear the voice of Mr. Ruben. A voice that can be described as a unique mix of Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) and Prince. A perfect fit with the funk with rock ‘n’ roll attitude of The Jig. As from today The One is avalaible on all major online platforms, like Bandcamp , Spotify and iTunes. In the spring of 2016 a complete album will follow where Mr. Ruben can be heard on several tracks.
-
Never say never
9 October 2015Never in the existence of mankind would The Jig work with a singer. Until now. Yes, well, couldn’t help it. It just happened. The soon to be released track The One features a rare specimen of a vocalist we dig. Want to know who and how it sounds? This saturday our rock ‘n’ funk-throated guest will pop up at our gig in Jazzcafe Alto (22:00 - 03:00). Be there or stay in the dark. The choice is yours...
-
Here we go again
4 September 2015Summer's gone, The Jig is back. After a show during Sail, september kicks in seriously with shows in Amsterdam, Uden and Den Bosch. In December a tour will bring the band to stages in Belgium and Germany. More gigs will follow. And on top of that, The Jig will soon release a revolutionary new track. Followed by more songs with famous guests, leading to their third full album in the spring of next year.

22 December 2014Just before Christmas, The Jig crossed borders once more, this time by doing a blitz tour through three countries: first we went to Strasbourg for our first gig ever in France at the notorious Muddclub of Phil Mudd. Then we rushed on to the other European hotspot: in Brussels we were invited by DJ Reedoo to play at the Bar du Matin for the second time. The day after we crossed the border again to play for the third time at the Jazzkeller in Krefeld. The mini tour ended in Minden Germany at the famous Jazzclub, where a/o George Duke, Dizzy Gillespie, Maceo Parker played before us. Look here for a short video impression.

Rio das Ostras
29 August 2014The Jig recently did a couple of shows in Brazil. Highlight was the concert at the Rio das Ostras Jazz&Blues festival. This festival in the state of Rio de Janeiro is the biggest of its kind in South America. The festival directors Stenio Mattos and Manfra saw the Jig two years ago at the Amersfoort Jazz festival and invited the band. The Jig was this year’s only European act. The artists on this edition included heroes like Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Scott Henderson and Raul Midon. The Jig played on the main Costazul stage for a crowd of 15 thousand (!) dancing and cheering Brazilians. Next up was trumpet legend Randy Brecker; closing act of the night was the impressive New York bluesman Popa Chubby. Jig members had the change to meet the musicians and all the new fans in Brazil. After this amazing experience the band travelled to Sao Paulo to play in the Serralheria club. The Jig teamed up with Sao Paulo band Black Mantra and together they gave the audience a genuine funk party. Take a look this video (drone shots included of Rio das Ostras!) of the appearances.

Reviews
24 May 2013The first reviews of the new album Aargh! are coming in. Here some quotes: Dusty groove: "Razor-sharp funk from The Jig – a group who come across with a really classic feel throughout – and a vibe that's a lot like The JBs at their early 70s best! Like that legendary group, these guys have a great way of fusing their horn parts with their rhythms." Jazzism: "Two years ago The Jig made its debut with the critically acclaimed Brooklyn Blowout, followed by a vast amount of shows throughout Europe. This second album Aargh! is again phonkey, filthy, dirty and sleazy."

New album preps
24 December 2012In October, the Jig had a marvelous short tour in Germany. The band did gigs in Luenen, Krefeld, Hamburg and Berlin. Look at the video here. In 2013 The Jig is definitely coming back to Germany: the first show has been confirmed. Before that, the Jig will release its second album. After the well received debut album Brooklyn Blowout recorded in New York, the band stayed in Amsterdam this time for the successor. Recordings have recently been finished in the bands own Rock Supplies studios in Amsterdam. Some fantastic musicians and friends of the band are joining on the new record: Joseph Bowie from Defunkt, the highly influental funk band from New York. And the two best saxophone players of the Netherlands: tenor sax player Boris van der Lek (ex Herman Brood Wild Romance) and alt sax player Benjamin Herman of the New Cool Collective. In January the album is finished in Studio 150 in Amsterdam: mixing will be done by Joeri Saal (Candy Dulfer, Paul Weller, Zuco103), mastering by Zlaya Hadzic, who also mastered Brooklyn Blowout.
